Websites / interactivity / multi-media

I’ve been creating, running and managing high-profile, content rich, websites for many years (I built my first web magazine in 1999).

Since 2002 I’ve been employed by the BBC to produce websites and their contents, inc. social media. My roles include: Multi-media broadcast journalist, web editor, digital producer and digital content manager.

I’ve been lucky enough to direct, produce, create and commission text, pictures, video, audio, quizzes and games that have been consumed by many millions of people.

Also…
I’m interested in how the web can be used to reach and engage.

I like making & creating; ideas, strategy and theory, teams, successful websites, great ‘user experiences’, web communities and lots more.

Brief employment history

Superuser – BBC Vision
April 2010 – current

Planning, guiding and delivering web projects for BBC Factual and BBC Drama. The job’s a mixture of consultant, digital content management, creation of web strategy and interactive producing.

Also: In March 2010 I began giving web / media strategy advice to charities through the Media Trust, as a volunteer.

Interactive producer (web manager role) – BBC The One Show
2008 – 2010

A two year project, directly managing BBC The One Show’s interactive / web team in London.

Our job was to strengthen the relationship between this ‘flagship’ factual brand and its huge audience, to extend the conversation etc.
We re-launched and then doubled the popularity of the show’s website in the first year.

The site was updated five days a week and was content rich – which meant the commissioning, creation and management of blogs, features, video (often featuring famous faces), games etc etc.

Working for The One Show gave me access to an audience of around five million people per night, five nights a week for two years. This allowed me to try out web theory and strategy on a mass mainstream audience, and then tweak, improve, retry and repeat.

One Show video example

During my two years at BBC The One Show, its website featured lots of exclusive interviews with big names.

Ricky Gervais or Adrian Chiles. Who would win in a fight? Ricky answered my daft question here;

This interview was conducted by our team’s video director Joanna Haslam.
After appearing on the website, excerpts from this interview were broadcast on the One Show TV programme. (This video requires Flash)

New Media producer / broadcast journalist – BBC Website
2002-2008

Launched / managed / produced multi-media content for websites including;

bbc.co.uk/birmingham
bbc.co.uk/crufts
bbc.co.uk/blackcountry
bbc.co.uk/wm
bbc.co.uk/suffolk
bbc.co.uk/radiosuffolk/
bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire
bbc.co.uk/radiosheffield
bbc.co.uk/videonation

And I had a hand in a few others, too.

Video example

Back in 2007 I produced, directed and edited one of my favourite short videos. It was for an adoption campaign. It was seen on BBC One, on digital channels etc.
